This bespoke 20sqm summerhouse was built in an urban London garden and replaced a rotten timber decking area that had been used for BBQs and outdoor dining.

The main house is used as a photo shoot location and the brief was to extend the usable space available and to allow more family space when the house wasn’t being hired out.

The building, designed by Hannah Gooch, was to be completed within permitted development, which meant there was a maximum height that could be reached and as the exterior walls were within 1m of the boundaries, the building had to comply to fire regulations.

After an unsuccessful search for an off-the-shelf building that came within budget, it was decided to build something bespoke that would not only fit the space perfectly but allow for better proportions.

The design was sympathetic to the main Victorian house and sat very comfortably within the space surrounding it. It uses reclaimed clay tiles for the roof and a bespoke door, which is just over five and a half feet high but creates the illusion of size. The sides are clad in green powder coated steel along with the flat roof at the back, which protects the building from spread of fire.

The summerhouse interior has a white stained wooden floor made from pine floor boards stained with Manns white wood stain and clear varnished. Each wall on the inside, painted in Little Greene’s French Grey, is different to allow a range of backdrops for photo shoots. The interior woodwork is also painted in Little Greene’s French Grey Dark. Farrow & Ball’s Off Black is used for the exterior of the summerhouse accessorising it with some lights from Garden Trading

The summerhouse interior lights are made up of components from Creative Cables and William and Watson. The summerhouse also has a beautiful Douglas fir table and an original Ercol chair and footstool. It has wonderful light and has already hosted a number of shoots.

The summerhouse is available to hire for photo shoots and filming through Light Locations.
